But, Vavi cannot be a president of a country! He can oppose yes, but Vavi just does not have the persona, skills and the sophistication of running a country, at least i believe so! This brings me to Morgan Tsvangirai, this man is a hero, he has managed to mobilise Zimbwabweans around a single cause of defeating Mugabe. I pray he succeeds, over a decade now he has graced our TV screens in South Africa, defiant, sometimes beaten and harassed, physically violated, surviving Mugabe's assassination attempts, this man is the Chuck Norris of Zim politics, he has fought a good fight, he has kept the faith till the end!
All emotion dictates that he finally ascends the throne and wear the crown of victory. But let us be a little critical and ask this question for the sake of a better Zimbwabwe from the head? Is Morgan the right guy for the job? Will he be able to handle the broken machinery of the Zim government? I will be the first one to say I don’t know Morgan very well, except his heroics against Mugabe.
- What I do know is that his party split into two under him. And this was such a low point in Zim opposition politics, the charge was that Morgan did not have vision, he sat back without a plan after Mugabe stole elections, no fight back campaign was held, this frustrated his follower and led to the split. MDC and Zim had to endure yet another term under Mugabe!
- His has been accused of lack of political acumen at times, he was seen as unsophisticated by the Mbeki people when he went to the media to complain about Mbeki's lack of forceful action during Mbeki's mediation (look i do not fault him much there, Mbeki's quite diplomacy on Zim can drive any man insane).
Now the above stories do not disqualify Morgan from being a great president of Zimbwabwe, certainly one can argue that he makes a better prospect that Dr.Simba Makoni and Mugabe. He is the moral leader, much better than South Africa's Jacob Zuma.
But I will declare my skeptical advice about Morgan; I believe Morgan should rather take a political father role of the new government. I believe he is more suited to be the unifier, and seek to sell MDC to the Mugabe rural constituencies. He can then make sure that the best brains that MDC has can then ascend to rule the country while he becomes the symbol of freedom. He stands to then be the real father of Zimbwabwe and avoid the tricky task of governance.
Look in the end, its up to Morgan himself to decide what he wants to be, liberators do not always make good governors. I also hope that the other faction stays as opposition and Zanu-PF remains as opposition, just to keep MDC on its toes. In SA we have learnt that in the absence of credible opposition, the liberators quickly loose their way!
